New Hythe,July 20th,21st and 23rd.

The most notable bird seen today was a juvenile Peregrine in the area of Eccles island creek.It was put up from the river bank as I walked between the Hawthorns,it flew across the river and landed briefly on the far bank before flying off in the direction of Burham,as it went I noticed a Buzzard, high above the North Downs.



July 21st - A short ringing session in the east scrub produced 1 adult Willow Warbler,2 juvenile Bullfinch,1 adult Goldfinch,1 Juvenile Robin and 2 juvenile Chiffchaff.A Peregrine was heard and one Common Tern flew over towards Tesco lake.

July 20th
River Medway,birds seen - 7 Cormorant,6 Canada Geese,4 Mallard,2 adult Shelduck,with a brood of 9 nearly full grown young and 4 Heron.

Railway lake,birds seen - 18 Tufted Duck,2 GC Grebes and 1 female Pochard.

Mill stream - one Clouded Yellow (my first) Painted Ladies still abundant.


Brookland lake,July 25th 1971 - water level rather high,no exposed mud,few small islands showing.Birds seen-female Tufted Duck with a brood of 7,1 Greenshank,4 adult,2 imm Herring Gulls,1 imm LBB Gull,2 adult GBB Gulls,several Coot families,few 10 Lapwing.

Abbey Mead lake - many small islands and much mud exposed,birds seen - 2 Greenshank,2 Green Sandpiper,3 LR Plover,30 Lapwing,2 Common Tern,2 drake Pochard,2 Tufted Duck,13 Canada Geese,2 GCGrebe families,13 adult Mute Swan,60 Sand Martin,100 Swifts,few Linnet,Greenfinches,Goldfinches,Stock Doves and Turtle,around banks.

1979 Hoopoe,one was seen at Leybourne from July 30th-31st.

New Hythe,July 16th.


During a early morning visit to New Hythe on the morning of the 16th,I was lucky to find a young Cuckoo being fed by a Reed Warbler along the Mill Stream.

New Hythe,July 14th.

Seeing as there was some early morning cloud about I popped down to New Hythe and put up one 40ft net in the east scrub, birds ringed were 2 Nightingale,1 Common Whitethroat,4 Lesser Whitethroat (1 ad,3Juv) 2 Bullfinch,1 Robin,1 Great Tit and 1 Dunnock.While I was there I heard a Oystercatcher passing over and a short while later a flock of 10 Sand Martin passed southwest.
